Cash & Power = Right to Subjugate & Harass Others?
A
new study found that 75% of the world’s honey is contaminated with bee-killing
pesticides. This shows how much control
pesticide companies have over our food system. And they’re trying to gain even
more. Bayer the Bee-Slayer is trying to merge with Monsanto the
Butterfly-Killer. Bees are dying at
alarming rates. Monarch butterflies are declining. And a new study found that
80 percent of the insects in Germany have declined over the past three decades.
One of the key culprits is the massive increase in the use of pesticides. These pesticides are harming our health and
our food system. But they’re generating millions in profits for Bayer and
Monsanto. This merger is one way the companies are trying to shore up their
control and double down on toxic industrial-scale, chemical-intensive
agriculture. The new company is taking
on $60 billion in debt in order to merge. How’s it going to pay it back? By
making as much profit as it can, as fast as it can. That means manufacturing
even more toxic products at the expense of our environment and planet.
If
this merger goes through, we’d be giving a single corporation unprecedented
control of our food supply. The impacts on farmers and consumers could be huge.
We can’t let the future of our food system be handed over to Bayer and
Monsanto. This merger is happening as
part of a massive wave of consolidation in our food system. Dow and DuPont just
merged. So did ChemChina and Syngenta. Bayer
and Monsanto are trying to rush this deal through. Both companies have spent
millions of dollars on lobbying. So far this year, Monsanto has paid 10
lobbying firms $2.2 million dollars and Bayer has spent $4.9 million. These
companies are aggressively pushing for approval of the merger. But this isn’t a done deal. Together, we can
stop this mega-merger from being approved.
