Trumpism is a losing formula, and last night’s election results prove it. Progressive candidates were victorious at the ballot box in Virginia, in New Jersey, in local races from Minneapolis to Washington State, and across the country! Candidates that rejected hate and stood firm on their values not only swept to victory, but earned record-breaking support from immigrant communities and communities of color.
In Virginia, CPD Action partners New Virginia Majority and CASA in Action led powerful Get Out The Vote operations in the state’s growing immigrant and Black communities, resulting in a Democratic sweep of the statewide offices and major advances for progressives in the House of Delegates. Elizabeth Guzman and Hala Ayala, two of our partners’ endorsees, will be the first Latinas in the state’s legislature. CPD Action affiliates in New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New York, Washington, and half a dozen other states had victories—and suffered some narrow defeats—with local candidates coming up through the ranks of local movements and organizations to be part of the fight for power. And we did build power. Between the deep and transformative year-round organizing and the fury of the Resistance, our network’s members and volunteers knocked on tens of thousands of doors, phone-banked, and organized to elect leaders who will be accountable to their communities—and many of those leaders won. Tuesday night’s results should be all the proof Democrats need to see that the path to victory in 2018 and 2020 consists of doubling down on strong progressive values and investing in communities of color. We know that fighting for the working class and fighting discrimination go hand in hand. In 2018, we look forward to working with you, to pushback even harder on Trump and his cronies, and to elect a tidal wave of new leaders who represent a bold, multiracial vision for justice in this country.
In solidarity,
Brian Kettenring

The
Trump Administration wants to sacrifice an endangered species in order to let
Big Oil drill on our public lands. The
iconic sage grouse depends on the sagebrush habitat that covers much of the Western
U.S. But that same habitat sits on top of fossil fuel resources that the oil
industry is desperate to get its hands on.
Trump’s Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke wants to strip protections
for the sage grouse in order to open these lands to Big Oil. The health of the sage grouse determines the
survival of an entire ecosystem of species, including the golden eagle, elk,
pronghorn and mule deer. Thanks to the
current protections for the sage grouse, this ecosystem is off-limits to Big
Oil. The pristine sagebrush ecosystem is open for all to enjoy. But Trump and Zinke are pushing to gut these
historic conservation plans, selling out our public lands and putting rare
species in danger for unnecessary fossil fuel development. We cannot allow the sage grouse to be
sacrificed for Big Oil's profits. We need to demand that the Interior
Department protects the sage grouse and other treasures of biodiversity, and
not corporate profits!
Trump
and Zinke want to open up millions of acres of our public lands -- places that
belong to you and me -- to Big Polluters and other special interests. They’re
more concerned with the fossil fuel industry’s profits than with protecting
wildlife, public health and a safe climate.
Our public lands belong to the American people, not Big Oil. They should
be preserved for the wildlife that call them home. And we should be able to
explore them without seeing and smelling coal mines and oil wells. Public pressure has stopped the Trump
Administration from handing over our public lands before. After Friends of the
Earth members like you sent in more than 300,000 comments, you stopped the
Trump Administration from rolling back protections for Colorado’s Canyons of the
Ancients, Idaho’s Craters of the Moon and Washington’s Hanford Reach. Now, we
need your help to do it again.
