On October 1, at least 59 people were shot and
killed and over 500 more were hospitalized at an outdoor music festival in Las
Vegas. The nation is mourning while the details of the largest and deadliest
mass shooting in our modern history are still unfolding. This horrific shooting forces us as a nation
to decide: Will we accept the status quo and allow mass shootings and gun
homicides to be the backdrop to our daily lives? Or do we want to live in a
country where we can go to the movies or a concert or school or work or church
and be safe from gun violence? We’ve
made our choice. And we choose to honor the victims and survivors in Las Vegas
by demanding that Congress reject the NRA leadership’s radical and dangerous
agenda [Everytown – Daily Kos, October 10, 2017]

Google News suddenly
decides not to drop Russia's “troll factory” media outlet 🗞
Just two
days after Russia’s media regulator Roskomnadzor asked Google to explain why
its news aggregator stopped indexing stories from the Federal News
Agency (FAN) — a media outlet with ties to the infamous “troll
factory” — Google News suddenly restored coverage of FAN content,
the outlet reported on
November 5. Without any explanation, Google News dropped FANon
October 27, leading the publication to accuse Google of censorship designed to
benefit the U.S. government and restrict users’ access to information about the
Russian-backed Syrian regime’s fight against terrorists. FAN vowed
to appeal to Russian antitrust regulators and other officials. On November 3,
Roskomnadzor — Russia's federal Internet censor — sent a letter to Google
demanding an explanation, claiming that part of Roskomnadzor's role is the
protection of free speech.
·
Based on the time of day that Google News restarted its
aggregation of FAN content, the outlet believes the
decision was made by Google’s headquarters in the U.S., not by the
company’s Moscow office.
·
FAN was created in 2014, and it was initially based in the
same office in St. Petersburg as the infamous “troll factory,” which was
allegedly founded by the catering magnate Evgeny Prigozhin. According to an
investigative report published by the magazine RBC in March
2017, the troll factory is tied to a whole “media group” that includes half a
dozen publications, where FAN is the most prominent. The total
audience for the media network was estimated to be 11 million unique viewers a
month. (The Real Russia. Today. November 6)
The election results are
a massive repudiation of Donald Trump, as voters turned out in force at the
ballot box to elect progressives and defeat Republicans throughout the
country. Working Families
Party-endorsed candidates helped set off a political earthquake in Virginia,
helping to flip enough seats to put the Republican majority in the House of
Delegates at risk -- something no one thought was possible
just 24 hours ago.
But if you've just heard
about the wins in Virginia and New Jersey so far, you're not hearing the entire
story. Dozens of WFP Progressive Heroes
also won victories in New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,
Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington... with results still rolling in! One year into the Trump era, we are
showing what’s possible when progressives work together across the country to
bring our resistance to the ballot box.
The task before us isn't
easy, but it is clear. We need to build on last night's wins to defeat Trump’s
attacks on working families, fight back against the Republican Party that
enables him, stand tall against the white supremacists he’s emboldened, and
keep electing progressives to take back statehouses and Congress in 2018 and
then the White House. To do that, we
need to keep fighting every day to defeat Trump and show that that there is a
progressive, populist alternative that can win by articulating a clear vision
of a country that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected.
Last night's results
didn't come out of thin air. For the past year, WFP organizers and
activists have partnered with allies to help elect progressives in local and
special elections in every corner of the country, from the deep South to the
Trump-supporting suburbs of the Northeast.
Here are just some of the
progressive heroes you helped elect:
- Hala Ayala and
Elizabeth Guzman, who defeated two Republican
incumbents in Virginia and became the first two Latinas elected to the
House of Delegates, leading the charge of tonight's progressive sweep
across the state;
- Lydia Edwards, a legal
services lawyer, housing advocate, and key organizer behind the
Massachusetts Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights who won her race for City
Council in Boston;
- Vernetta Alston, who won her
race for City Council in Durham, NC fighting to ensure her city protects
the rights of immigrants, people of color and LGBTQ people; and
- Crystal Murillo, a young
Mexican-American recruited by Colorado People's Action who defeated a
Trump-supporting Republican incumbent for City Council in Aurora, CO.
We've shown that we know
how to turn our activism into results at the ballot box. Over
the last two months, Working Families Party volunteers reached out to more
250,000 voters in targeted races to get out the vote and elect progressive
candidates to local office. Now the
clock starts ticking to 2018. One year
from tonight, we want to be joining you in celebrating kicking even more
Republicans out of office and electing progressive majorities to Congress and
in statehouses across the country.
Thanks for being a part
of this resistance with us,
Joe Dinkin
