Speaker of the House

SPEAKER PAUL RYAN is going to Puerto Rico Friday. [Playbook Power Briefing, October 10, 2017]

House Speaker Paul Ryan pretended to address the Las Vegas massacre. He trotted out the GOP's usual crutchmental health reform, which is really rich, given that his ill-fated House health care plan would have killed Obamacare's Medicaid expansion and capped funding for regular Medicaid -- the single largest source of funding for mental health treatment in the US. Remarkably, he did it with a straight face. He also tried to ignore a question about why Republicans made it easier back in February for some mentally ill people to get a gun, saying only that their rights were being infringed [Fast Forward, October 5, 2017]

MITCH MCCONNELL
Majority Leader of the Senate

Asked if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is open to combining an ObamaCare stabilization bill and CHIP, McConnell spokesman Don Stewart noted that there is no stabilization bill yet, so it is hard to answer a "hypothetical" question. [Overnight Health Care, October 4, 2017]

IMMIGRATION

When you make a promise to someone, you keep it. It’s that simple.  Our country promised Dreamers that we would not take their bright futures away from them. But Donald Trump has gone back on our promise and is threatening to kick out these young immigrants who know no other home but the United States. It’s heartless and cruel, and I’m fighting to ensure these young people can stay in the country they love.  If Trump kicks out these 800,000 young people, it will not only tear their families and our communities apart, but it will damage our local economies. Dreamers are business owners, students, activists, and entrepreneurs.  Our country has invested in these young people; why would we make them leave now?  Dreamers are American in their heart and soul, just not in their paperwork.  It’s absolutely wrong for Trump to rip them from their families and deport them to countries they may have never known.
