WHITE HOUSE |
LOBBYING RAMPS UP ON 702 - The Trump administration is mounting a multipronged
campaign to convince congressional lawmakers - and the general public - to let
it retain warrantless digital surveillance tools, Martin reports with our
colleague Josh Meyer. The White House wants a permanent reauthorization of
these spying programs allowed under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act, which expires at the end of this year without congressional
action. "This is clearly a major issue for the intelligence
community," Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told reporters on
Monday at a media briefing. "It's one of the absolute top priorities for
us."

“Maybe it’s the calm before the storm." — President Trump
during a photo-op with military leaders
“What’s the storm?” a reporter asked. "On Iran? On ISIS? On
what?” “We have the world’s great military people," Trump replied. “Thank
you all for coming.” "What storm Mr. President?” reporters pressed.
“You’ll find out," Trump replied

"The deliberations ahead of an October 15 deadline to
certify Iran's compliance with the deal, a centerpiece of President Barack
Obama's foreign policy agenda, were described by a half-dozen sources inside
and outside the administration who have participated in the internal debate.
"As a candidate, Trump described the agreement as
'catastrophic' and 'the worst deal ever.' But the strategy represents a nuanced
approach to one of the most important foreign policy decisions of his early
presidency. The goal is to allow the president to demonstrate contempt for the
agreement and broadcast a new level of toughness toward the Iranian
regime-without triggering the international chaos several of his advisers warn
would follow from a total withdrawal from the 2015 deal." [POLITICO Playbook, October 4, 2017]
WOMEN'S RIGHTS |
Another day, another attack on women
by Republicans. On Friday, we learned
that the Trump Administration will be rolling back Affordable Care Act
protections on birth control by once again allowing employers to refuse to
cover it. The rule will take effect
immediately with no opportunity for public comment, which is required by law.
And this is just a few days after Paul Ryan and House Republicans passed a
shameful 20-week abortion ban.
Make no mistake: these are cowardly
political moves that attack women financially and harm women physically.
Over 60 million American women rely
on birth control, and the Affordable Care Act saved them nearly $1.5 billion
per year. It is estimated that 14% of women use contraception for health
reasons other than birth control to combat things like ovarian cancer and
ovarian cysts. The timing is
particularly bad because, unsurprisingly, Paul Ryan and other anti-women
Republicans are pushing a tax plan that will penalize poor and middle-class
families for having more than three children. [Cathy Myers for Congress, Wisconsin's First District] Another day, another attack on women
