Sen. Jeff Flake pledged to be a lead
reformer this cycle, describing it as a "lonely
fight." He said his plan for the next farm bill, known as the AFFIRM
Act, S. 1025 (115), would put $30 billion back
in the pockets of small farmers and taxpayers by going after some of Big Ag's
"most egregious handouts," including the controversial crop insurance
policy Harvest Price Option. Both the Obama and Trump administrations produced

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump hasn't
done any favors for his national security team - which is lobbying Congress to
renew the spying tools well before the Dec. 31 deadline - with his blanket statements about surveillance and
wiretaps. The rhetoric from the White House has also made life more difficult
for the statute's Capitol Hill supporters. "It's made it harder for us,
there's no doubt about it," said Rep. Chris Stewart, who chairs the House
Intelligence Committee's defense subpanel. "If I'm a little conflicted on
this, you can imagine what some of the folks are who kind of lean in that
