Barr's herculean efforts to spin Robert Mueller's damning report to protect Trump was a sad spectacle, a disturbing confirmation that under Barr, the Justice Department is simply not an independent entity.

That was perfectly illustrated by his bizarre interpretation of the Don McGahn section of the Mueller report on obstruction:

Mueller report: More than once, Trump directed McGahn, then the top White House lawyer, to tell acting AG Rod Rosenstein that Mueller "had conflicts of interest and must be removed." McGahn didn't do it.

Barr's version: Trump made an oh so innocent and pure suggestion to McGahn that perhaps he might want to mention to Rosenstein that maybe Mueller had a conflict of interest and Rosenstein might want to look into that but hey, no pressure.

Barr did not explain why, if Trump's request was so innocuous, McGahn refused to carry it out.

Mueller report: When The New York Times found out about Trump's order and wrote about it, Trump tried to get McGahn to issue a false statement "by directing White House officials to tell McGahn to dispute the story and create a record stating he had not been ordered to have the Special Counsel removed." McGahn refused.

Barr's version: Oh, Trump innocently and purely thought the Times' article was inaccurate and simply wanted McGahn to correct the record. Again, if that were true, why did McGahn refuse? [Fast Forward, May 2, 2019]
