WANG QISHAN ELECTED CHINA'S V.P.: Wang Qishan, who ran China's anti-corruption agency during President Xi Jinping's first term and was a frequent visitor to Washington during the Obama administration, has been promoted to vice president. China's parliament elected Wang to his new position on Saturday by a vote of 2,969 to one, while approving Xi for a second term by a unanimous vote.
Wang may be best known in Washington trade circles for running the economic track of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue under Xi's predecessor, former Chinese President Hu Jintao. He also was the chief Chinese interlocutor for at least five annual meetings of the decades-old U.S.-China Joint Committee on Commerce and Trade, a forum led by USTR and the Commerce Department that the Trump administration made no attempt to continue.

"He is the rare Chinese official that has major credibility in both Beijing and Washington," Evan Medeiros, leader of the Eurasia Group's Asia-Pacific coverage told the Washington Post. "Both American business leaders and policymakers welcome his expertise and frank style of negotiating: he is a trusted interlocutor." [POLITICO's Morning Trade, March 19,2018]

Other ways Mattis says Iran is being provocative: Weapons testing and Iran's involvement in Iraqi elections. To the first point, the AP writes that Mattis explained "the strait between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, off the coast of southern Yemen, is being used as a 'proving ground' for advanced Iranian weaponry. This includes anti-ship missiles, radars, mines, ballistic missiles and explosive boats." [The D Brief, March 16, 2018]

YEMEN

Since March 2015, the United States has supported a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a civil war in Yemen. The war has resulted in massive civilian casualties, and the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. It has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis and wounded more than 40,000, the majority of whom were civilians.
This is happening with our tax dollars — we can and must act to stop US involvement in the war in Yemen.
We’re joining a massive coalition of progressive partners, millions of activists strong, to demand an end to US involvement in the war in Yemen.
It's time to wage peace, not war. The lives of millions of people hang in the balance.

See you out there in the fight.
