Russia’s Defense Ministry is accusing the United States of
“quietly” deploying a second armored brigade in Poland, during last month’s
Russian-Belarusian “Zapad-2017” military exercises. “And so, contrary to all of the
announcements by NATO and the U.S. about the ‘insignificance’ of their
troops being concentrated at Russia’s borders, now we see that it’s de
facto not a brigade but a mechanized division of the U.S. armed
forces within two hours of trained personnel who could be redeployed from the
nearest American base in Europe,” said Defense Ministry spokesman Igor
Konashenkov.
·
The Zapad-2017 training exercises took
place from September 14 to September 20, officially involving 13,000 troops.
Baltic states reacted with particular alarm, and Lithuania’s president worried
openly that Moscow was practicing for an invasion of NATO members.
·
In late September, Ukrainian officials
claimed that most of the Russian troops involved in Zapad-2017 have remained in
Belarus. Moscow denies these allegations. [The Real Russia.

NATIONAL NEWS |
On October 1, at least 59 people were shot and
killed and over 500 more were hospitalized at an outdoor music festival in Las
Vegas. The nation is mourning while the details of the largest and deadliest
mass shooting in our modern history are still unfolding. This horrific shooting forces us as a nation
to decide: Will we accept the status quo and allow mass shootings and gun
homicides to be the backdrop to our daily lives? Or do we want to live in a
country where we can go to the movies or a concert or school or work or church
and be safe from gun violence? We’ve
made our choice. And we choose to honor the victims and survivors in Las Vegas
by demanding that Congress reject the NRA leadership’s radical and dangerous
agenda [Everytown – Daily Kos, October 10, 2017]

In April, President Trump ordered the U.S.
Department of the Interior to reconsider 20 years of national monuments
protections, opening the door to expanded drilling, mining and other harmful
development. But national monuments are
inseparable from our heritage as a nation, and they hold irreplaceable memories
for so many of us—Republicans and Democrats, city-dwellers and rural folks
alike. That's why Environmental Action
joined with a coalition of environmental advocates, land stewards and others to
send a clear message to the Trump administration: political and economic
fortunes may shift in America, but our national monuments should be
forever. We delivered comments from
106,000 Americans like you to Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke—altogether,
the coalition rallied more than 2.7 million comments in support of keeping
public lands in public hands.
Founded at the first Earth Day with a mission
to protect the planet and all of us who live on it, we are Environmental
Action. We stand up to big polluters, take on the corrupt politicians and give
everyone in America a chance to be an environmentalist with simple, powerful
actions.

Everyone should be able to send their kids to school without
fear for their children’s health. Every school day,
millions of children are exposed to toxic emissions from diesel buses. But
states have an opportunity to utilize millions of dollars from Volkswagen’s
settlement to ensure our kids breathe cleaner air. Write to your governor: Invest in clean school buses that
protect our children’s health and reduce damage to our climate. Children are especially sensitive to diesel
exhaust because their lungs are not yet fully developed. At an age when they
are most at risk, we must shield our kids from toxic emissions. Each state is set to collect millions of
dollars in compensation for the damage to our health and environment caused by
Volkswagen’s deceit — cheating federal emissions tests and polluting our air.
There is no better way for governors to invest this money than to transition to
electric, zero-emission vehicles for the sake of our children’s
health. Urge your governor to use
the Volkswagen settlement funds to safeguard our kids from diesel pollution. Together, we can take action to protect our
kids’ health and pave the way for a cleaner future. --

NEWS ITEMS "lost in the jungle" Trumpism Trounced In Tuesday’s Elections Republican John Curtis easily beats Democrat Kathie Allen, even in Salt Lake County Abbreviated Pundit Round-up: Shock election results shows backlash to Trumpism and fake news What the election night wins tell us about the future of transgender politics Winners and losers from Election Day 2017
The election results are
a massive repudiation of Donald Trump, as voters turned out in force at the
ballot box to elect progressives and defeat Republicans throughout the
country. Working Families Party-endorsed
candidates helped set off a political earthquake in Virginia, helping to flip
enough seats to put the Republican majority in the House of Delegates at risk
-- something no one thought was possible just 24 hours ago.
But if you've just heard
about the wins in Virginia and New Jersey so far, you're not hearing the entire
story. Dozens of WFP Progressive Heroes
also won victories in New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,
Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington... with results still rolling in! One year into the Trump era, we are
showing what’s possible when progressives work together across the country to
bring our resistance to the ballot box.
The task before us isn't
easy, but it is clear. We need to build on last night's wins to defeat Trump’s
attacks on working families, fight back against the Republican Party that
enables him, stand tall against the white supremacists he’s emboldened, and
keep electing progressives to take back statehouses and Congress in 2018 and
then the White House. To do that, we
need to keep fighting every day to defeat Trump and show that that there is a
progressive, populist alternative that can win by articulating a clear vision
of a country that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected.
Last night's results
didn't come out of thin air. For the past year, WFP organizers and
activists have partnered with allies to help elect progressives in local and
special elections in every corner of the country, from the deep South to the
Trump-supporting suburbs of the Northeast.
Here are just some of the
progressive heroes you helped elect:
We've shown that we know
how to turn our activism into results at the ballot box. Over
the last two months, Working Families Party volunteers reached out to more
250,000 voters in targeted races to get out the vote and elect progressive
candidates to local office. Now the
clock starts ticking to 2018. One year
from tonight, we want to be joining you in celebrating kicking even more
Republicans out of office and electing progressive majorities to Congress and
in statehouses across the country.
Thanks for being a part
of this resistance with us,
Joe Dinkin
