Immediately after the attacks on the Rohingya people in Myanmar
this year, we sent specialist Crisis Response Researchers, experienced in
hostile situations, to assess what was happening and speak to people arriving
in Bangladesh.
We must continue to:
·
Bring together experts in crisis response, satellite imagery,
communications and advocacy to be a leading voice on the Rohingya crisis.
·
Demand that Myanmar halt the restrictions imposed on
international and local aid organizations that have deprived the Rohingya of
food, medical care, water, sanitation and shelter.
·
Continue a wide scale media campaign to keep this tragedy front
and center.
·
Activate millions of Amnesty activists to protest the violence
and contact their representatives.
·
Call on the Myanmar government to allow a United Nations
fact-finding mission into the area to document and investigate the atrocities
that have taken place.
·
Pressure the international community to punish those accountable
for the crimes by imposing an arms embargo and financial sanctions against
senior Myanmar military officials.
Have you ever heard about someone in a desperate situation and
thought ‘somebody has to do something’? I’m writing to tell you, you can be
that somebody.
Sincerely,
Margaret Huang
