FOX IN JAPAN: International Trade Secretary Liam Fox will meet Japanese PM Shinzō Abe in Tokyo today. It comes after his opposite number Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday “welcomed” Britain’s bid to join the snappily titled “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership” — otherwise known in Whitehall as “C.P.T.P.P” (or by others as “T.P.P.11” just to confuse matters — see here for Wikipedia’s explanation). The giant free-trade area covers 11 countries, from Japan to Canada to Chile. [[POLITICO London Playbook, August 1, 2018]

U.K. BEGINS PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS ON JOINING TPP: The United Kingdom is
beginning public consultations on negotiating free trade agreements with the
United States, Australia and New Zealand after it completes its exit from the
European Union next year, as well as potentially joining the Trans-Pacific
Partnership, U.K. Trade Secretary Liam Fox said in a speech on Wednesday.
Fox, who is coming to Washington next week for talks, said the
consultations on joining the TPP reflected the government's desire "to
break new ground [by] putting the U.K. at the heart of the world's fastest
growing regions." The U.K. would be the second-largest economy in the TPP,
after Japan, if it is allowed to join. It would bring the collective size of
the pact to 17 percent of global GDP.
The U.K. cannot start trade talks until after it leaves the EU,
which is currently scheduled for March 29, 2019, and it cannot bring them into
force until a 21-month post-Brexit transition period expires on Dec. 31, 2020.
