“Beyond the economics of production efficiency, animal welfare laws that require "humane" treatment are really not about animals; they're about humans and making humans feel better about using animals. We can comfort ourselves with the idea that we are acting in a "humane" way.” ― Gary L. Francione, Eat Like You Care: An Examination of the Morality of Eating Animals

US Open, tennis

The men’s Grand Slam winners in 2018 have been less than surprising, with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic claiming titles, but the women’s side of the US Open should prove to be a wider race, after Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep both picked up their first majors this year. For the first time in the tournament’s history, all 17 courts at Flushing Meadows will use the video review system, previously reserved for show courts only.

ELECTIONS

Puerto Rico. Yemen. Syria.
Separated families. Climate change. Inequality.
Tax cuts for the rich. Budget cuts. The Muslim ban.
There are a lot of wrongs to right. But together, we can fight for what's right. Together, we can vote.
Whoever you are – a student, a parent, an activist – you are essential to the global movement to end the injustice of poverty. And voting is an important part of that. Maybe it's the most important part.
2018 is a turning point for our country. The mid-term elections will have consequences for decades to come, especially for people living in poverty.
Those of us who care about the world around us must show up and make our voices heard.
Oxfam is paying close attention to how the elections will affect inequality, refugees and migration, climate change, foreign aid, and US leadership in the world. We have to do our part to hold elected officials accountable to protect the most vulnerable people in the US and around the world.
Who we choose to run our government matters at every level – whether it's a local city council, a US Senator or the President of the United States. With everything going on in our world right now, the upcoming election is more important than ever.
This is not the time to close our hearts, our minds, or our borders. This is the time to vote. Join us in the fight for what's right. >>
Thank you for continuing to do your part to ensure the United States continues its fight against poverty and to preserve our legacy as a beacon of light in times of crisis.

CYBERSECURITY

RUSSIAN THREAT

‘The DNI just said publicly, that the system is blinking red.  That invokes George Tenet’s words after 9-11.  That’s a very stark admonition.  And then Ambassador Bolton has called Russia’s cyber attacks on America an ‘act of war’.  So these are President Trump’s own people, who are vociferously arguing about the threat emanating from Russia.’ [The Cipher Brief Tuesday, July 17, 2018]

A Not-So-Veiled Message for Moscow: The White House rolled out a solid show of senior level strength on Thursday when it came to the issue of Russia’s meddling in the upcoming U.S. elections.  The White House Press Corps heard from National Security Advisor John Bolton, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, Director of the NSA and Commander of Cyber Command, General Paul Nakasone, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

The Bottom Line:  Russia is making ‘pervasive’ efforts to influence American Democratic Institutions and the U.S. is responding by taking measures to bolster the security of local and state election systems as well as to confront Russian aggression ‘through international action and to reinforce a strong sanctions regime,’ according to Bolton.

General Nakasone shared limited details about support that Cyber Command is lending to both the FBI and DHS as they work with local and state officials ahead of November’s elections. “I have complete confidence, in the forces under my command.  We will work in conjunction with other elements of our government to ensure we bring the full power of our nation to bear on any foreign power that attempts to interfere on our democratic processes,” Nakasone told reporters.
