EUROPE

THROWING THE STEEL AND ALUMINUM WORLD OUT OF BALANCE: Europe's main steel industry group, EUROFER, said the tariffs would cut the 5 million tons that EU steelmakers exported to the United States in 2017 by 50 percent. Overall, the group said the tariff could restrict U.S. imports by up to 20 million to 25 million tons, representing more than half of what the EU imported in 2017.
In a global market already saturated with steel, that could mean the EU will be left to make "preventive contingency actions" to keep its market from being overwhelmed by capacity that won't be able to find a way into the United States, EUROFER Director-General Axel Eggert said.
"We welcome the announcement of the Commission that appropriate and swift measures will be taken to safeguard the interests and jobs in our industry. The EU must not allow that the moderate recovery in our industry over the last year is now being destroyed by the EU's most important political ally," Eggert said in a statement.
European Aluminum, the main industry group for that sector, took a similar view that Europe will become a destination for aluminum products that would have otherwise gone to the United States.

"The European value chain is already under enormous pressure due to global overcapacities; the announced measures put thousands of jobs in over 600 plants, many of which are SMEs, in countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden and Central and East European countries at risk," said Gerd Götz, director-general of the organization. "We urge the European Commission and EU member states to implement without further delay actions to protect our industrial interests, in line with international trade rules." TMT time: Sweden-based private equity firm EQT Partners last week announced that it had closed its eighth flagship fund with $13.2 billion. What didn't make the press release is that its large-cap investment mandate in the U.S. has expanded from healthcare to also include TMT and services (mimicking an earlier change in its U.S. mid-market fund strategy). EQT also will continue to make U.S. infrastructure investments out of a separate vehicle. [Axios Pro Rata: Friday, March 2]

I wish I didn’t have to write this email, but the escalating attacks on the people of Eastern Ghouta in Syria can’t go unanswered.

The Syrian government, backed by Russia, is intensifying the bombing of its own people. Hundreds have been killed and thousands have been injured in the past month.

We can’t allow bombs to fall on starving people in their homes. Tell the Syrian and Russian governments to lift the siege on Eastern Ghouta immediately.

The residents of Eastern Ghouta have been trapped in a siege for nearly six years. They are being attacked daily — killed and maimed by their government. Children and elderly people are dying of malnutrition and lack of medication.

Will you speak up now? Tell the Syrian and Russian governments to end the attacks on Eastern Ghouta immediately.

I can’t describe the situation better than the people on the ground, who are in contact with Amnesty’s crisis team. One medical center director tells us that:
“The situation in besieged Eastern Ghouta is a tragedy. As for doctors, may God help them. They are doing their best, but there is a severe lack of equipment and supplies, and hospitals in Eastern Ghouta are being heavily targeted for bombardment….even nursing mothers aren’t able to nurse their babies because of malnutrition.”
The attacks must stop immediately. Humanitarian aid must be allowed into Eastern Ghouta and civilians must be evacuated out of the region.

I can’t do it without the voices of people like you — please take action today because the people of Syria can’t wait.
