MID-TERM ELECTION 2018 -- 2 WEEKS OUT
FACEBOOK EXPANDS CRACKDOWN ON VOTING MISINFORMATION — The social networking site is ramping up efforts to curb the spread of misleading and false election-related information ahead of the midterms, unveiling a new policy on Monday aimed at curtailing voter suppression efforts. The policy allows the company to remove posts that are "designed to deter or prevent people from voting" by misrepresenting how they cast a ballot and whether their vote will count. For example, posts that incorrectly tell people to vote via text message would violate the new policy. "These updates were designed to address new types of abuse that we're seeing online," Jessica Leinwand, a Facebook public policy manager, wrote in a blog post. STATE OF THE STATE RESPONSE — The State Department disputed the characterization in an edition of MC last week of Secretary of State
Mike Pompeo's remarks about the security of the midterm election from foreign
interference. "Will Russia, China, and other actors continue to attempt to
sow discord with disinformation and propaganda?" said State Department
spokesperson Heather Nauert. "Certainly, but we're confident that our
ballot boxes will remain safe and more secure than they've ever been thanks to
the hard work of our colleagues at DHS." [POLITICO's Morning

THE PAIN FROM SPAIN FALLS MAINLY ON THE (FLEMISH) PLAIN
Spain slams Flanders for Catalan support: A diplomatic spat erupted this week between the Spanish and Flemish governments after the president of the Flemish parliament made statements in support of Catalan separatists. The Spanish government stripped the Flemish representative in Madrid of his diplomatic status in retaliation for the remarks by Jan Peumans, in which he criticized Spain’s response to last year’s Catalan independence referendum. Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois, above, called Spain’s decision a “very unfriendly act” and said Wednesday he would summon the Spanish ambassador as soon as possible, according to Belgian media. During the opening of a photo exhibition on the push for Catalonian independence last week, Peumans said of police efforts to stop the referendum, deemed illegal by the Spanish judiciary: “Anyone who uses violence at the ballot box burns democracy … True democrats honor the ballot box as a symbol of the will of the people.” He added that violence during a vote is “out of the question,” and “so is violence against politicians, because of their opinion. And imprisoning politicians is an act of violence.” [POLITICO EU Confidential, October 20, 2018]
