When Secretary of
State Rex Tillerson was fired with a tweet last month, few could have imagined
a replacement with worse climate credentials than the former Exxon executive.
But Trump's choice Mike Pompeo is that person.
While Tillerson advocated for the United States to stay in the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, Pompeo referred to it as part of President Obama's “radical environmental agenda.”1
As a Congressman, Pompeo ignored the scientific consensus around climate change2 and he refused to answer questions relating to climate change in his CIA confirmation hearing despite its role in destabilizing the globe and sowing conflict.
But there's one area where Pompeo excels -- collecting big money from the Koch Brothers and the dirty fuels industry. From 2010 through 2017, Pompeo was the top recipient of Koch money each election cycle, collecting more than $400,000 from the Kochs and $1.2 million from the dirty fuels industry as a whole during his short career in Congress.3
As climate change increasingly influences our international relations, Mike Pompeo is the wrong choice for Secretary of State. Tell your senators to vote against confirming Mike Pompeo!
American leadership on climate change isn’t just a moral imperative; it’s also an essential component of our foreign policy and building stronger relationships with countries around the world.
Trump’s intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement has diminished America’s international standing and threatened our ability to lead the clean energy revolution. Pompeo leading our international climate efforts would be nothing short of a disaster.
As Secretary of State, Pompeo would also play a critical role in evaluating proposed dirty fuel projects. His support for Keystone XL and opposition to the Clean Power Plan indicate that Pompeo is more interested in enriching corporate polluters than protecting people or the planet.

PROGRESSIVE GROUPS URGE SENATE TO REJECT POMPEO -- Dozens
of national progressive groups are calling on the Senate to reject CIA Director
Mike Pompeo's nomination to be secretary of state. Roughly 70 groups signed
onto a letter obtained by Huddle expressing opposition to Pompeo, warning that
he "promotes principles and policies that are antithetical to American
values." "His repeated advocacy for war, Islamophobia, climate change
denial, hostility to human rights, including reproductive and LGBT rights, and
support for torture make him dangerous and unfit to be a chief architect of
U.S. foreign policy," they write.
Pompeo's confirmation
faces an uncertain path in the Senate, where Republicans hold
a narrow 51-49 majority. Fourteen Senate Democrats voted for him to be CIA
director. But with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) publicly opposed and Sen. John McCain
(R-Ariz.) recovering from cancer treatment, Democrats could sink Pompeo's
confirmation bid with united opposition. Republicans, however, could find
support from vulnerable red-state Democrats running for reelection this year.
But progressive groups are arguing that a Secretary of State Pompeo would be the
leader of Trump's "War Cabinet." "Pompeo is unfit to serve as
Secretary of State," the groups conclude. "We urge you to oppose and
