A RUSSIAN TROLL IN EVERY TEAPOT
A chicken in every pot -- the phrase has its origins in seventeenth century France; Henry IV reputedly wished that each of his peasants would enjoy "a chicken in his pot every Sunday." OPPOSING FACTIONS BACK TRUMP NOMINEE -- Though
Senate Democrats have expressed concern about what Richard Grenell -- Trump's
openly gay nominee to be ambassador to Germany -- tweets, "his nomination
has attracted support from an unlikely coalition of conservative commentators
and gay rights activists," The New York Times Maggie Haberman reports.
"The Senate Foreign Relations Committee advanced his nomination at the end
of October, and he appears to have enough support to clear the full Senate. But
like other nominees, he is trapped in arcane parliamentary tactics."
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) declined
to advance to Grenell's nomination when Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
tried to move Grenell via unanimous consent, which required a voice vote. Senate
officials say an anonymous senator has placed a hold on Grenell's nomination,
meaning a vote would require 30 hours of debate. "Republicans have
consistently faulted Democrats for the lack of movement on nominees," she
adds. "But privately, some White House advisers say Mr. McConnell could do
more -- like keep lawmakers in Washington -- to force nominations through even
with existing rules." [POLITICO Huddle, March

Miguel Perez -- a U.S. Army
veteran who risked his life TWICE for our country in Afghanistan -- was told
he's being deported today. No fair process. No goodbyes with his family. Like
far too many other veterans, Miguel Perez mistakenly thought he became a U.S.
citizen when he took an oath to protect the nation. Also like many veterans,
after serving his country, Miguel returned home wounds of war and instead of
being supported, is being deported for a nonviolent drug offense. We cannot
stand by as families are psychologically tortured, with ICE serving as a modern
day gestapo ruining the lives of countless people who want nothing more than to
build a safe and prosperous life for those they love. We've seen these
deportations halted before. In the military we knew to never leave our own
behind. Join me in fighting for one of our own when he needs us most.
In solidarity,

CLOTURE FILED ON WHEELER: Just before 1 a.m. Friday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed cloture on the nomination of
Andrew Wheeler to be deputy administrator of EPA. While the exact timing of
floor consideration remains unclear, the move likely tees up a vote on Wheeler’s
selection in the coming weeks. [POLITICO’s Morning Energy, March 23, 2018]

HOW TRUMP'S CHINA FIGHT COULD UPEND THE SCRAP ALUMINUM
INDUSTRY: The scrap aluminum industry is getting caught in the crossfire
between Beijing and Washington over Trump's new tariffs on imports of steel and
aluminum. The collateral damage? More beverage cans and used auto parts could
be left in U.S. landfills rather than recycled into new products overseas,
Doug reports.
Beijing has threatened a 25 percent tariff on more than $1
billion in U.S. exports of scrap aluminum in retaliation for the steel and
aluminum duties. That comes on top of a move in recent months by Chinese
President Xi Jinping to restrict imports of recyclable materials.
The U.S. could launch a case at the World Trade Organization
against the scrap tariff at the same time it's making it harder for China to
export aluminum and steel to the United States. The complicated situation has
the Trump administration playing offense and defense on the aluminum issue,
with the outcome of either action still up in the air.
In Beijing, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry defended
China's decision to ban what she referred to as "foreign
garbage." "The U.S. officials are so hypocritical as they try to make
an issue out of China's legitimate and lawful actions and accuse China of
seemingly violating WTO obligations," spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. [POLITICO's Morning Trade, March 28, 2018]
