NORTH KOREA TALKS COULD COAX SOME CHINA MOVEMENT: Trump's consistent linkage of China trade demands with Beijing's willingness to help put a check on North Korea's nuclear ambitions could move negotiations between the two economic giants forward. And although Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross returned from a trip to Beijing last weekend without any deals to announce, senior administration officials seemed "very upbeat."
Trump may even decide to take matters into his own hands if he perceives that China played a helpful role in upcoming talks with North Korea.
"The flight back from Singapore goes right through China, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if he made a stop in Beijing or some place to meet [Chinese President] Xi Jinping," said Scott Kennedy, a China expert at the Center on Strategic and International Studies.
"That personal interaction between the two does seem to be so critical, especially on this," he added.
Still, there is little indication that Trump is backing off tariffs. The plan is to have a final list of Chinese goods that would be hit with tariffs by June 15 — just a few days after the June 12 Singapore meeting.
"North Korea can clearly throw this off," said Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute. "It seems that the president thinks that the Chinese are the swing factor in whether the North Koreans cooperate or not." [POLITICO's Morning Trade, June 6, 2018]
