WORLD CUP INFO

Headed to Moscow for the World Cup?
Are you traveling to Moscow for this summer’s FIFA World Cup? You might not know this, but water heating is centralized in Russian cities, and there’s a chance that your accommodations will only have cold running water. The Moscow United Energy Company has an online service where you can look up your address and find out when the hot water service is scheduled to be unavailable. There’s one snag: you’ve got to enter the address in Russian, and you need to type it out, without copy-pasting the text. Is that annoyingly cumbersome? Of course! Have a great time in Moscow.

Drink responsibly, soccer fans 🍻⚽

If you’re headed to Moscow this summer for the FIFA World Cup, expect expect a lot of blocked-off streets and sweeping restrictions on the sale of alcohol (as well as any drinks packaged in glass bottles). A city official told the news agency Interfax on Wednesday that a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol will take effect in certain areas of Moscow on the days leading up to tournament games. The city is also mobilizing a large force of police and medical staff to manage intoxicated fans.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 15 and wraps up on July 15, will take place in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Samara, Saransk, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, and Yekaterinburg.  [The Real Russia. Today. April 25]

Putin's chef heads to Africa

You’ve heard of Evgeny Prigozhin’s catering empire, his private military company, his troll factory, and his close ties to the Defense Ministry, the Moscow school system, and Vladimir Putin, but have you heard about the team of political scientists he’s fielding in Africa ahead of upcoming local elections? According to the newspaper Kommersant, Prigozhin is funding a political-spin-doctor initiative focused on Madagascar, South Africa, and Kenya. The man reportedly in charge of the “Africa project” is Yaroslav Ignatovsky, whom Prigozhin formerly paid to monitor the “sociopolitical situation” in Russia’s North-Western Federal District. We have a chance to save millions of lives by ending America's shameful role in the war in Yemen.
Vermont progressive Senator Bernie Sanders and constitutional conservative Senator Mike Lee of Utah have introduced a resolution to cut off  U.S. support for this illegal war. Because Congress has never authorized the war in Yemen, Bernie’s resolution is guaranteed a vote within days. This is huge. And we have just a few days to get our senators on board.
For three years, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been waging a secretive war in Yemen. Saudi Arabia and its allies have deliberately put 8 million people a step away from famine. Meanwhile, the United States continues to funnel bombs, planes, and fuel into enabling Saudi and UAE brutality.
In the movie Spotlight, I play a journalist who is determined to uncover abuse, no matter how powerful the abuser. Spotlight shows us that harm against innocents can only persist when no one is watching. In Yemen, the powerful figure enabling human rights abuse is our own government.
I believe that when the American people are presented with the facts, we will act to stop our tax dollars from being used to bomb and starve innocent Yemenis simply to advance the Saudi dictatorship’s military ambitions.
