China will take a harder line against virtual currencies beginning this year, one of the nation's top economic regulators said Thursday. And the country plans to release its own cryptocurrency, revealed Fan Yifei, a vice governor at the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank. Beijing would join the governments of Venezuela and Iran in the state-backed cryptocurrency realm. [POLITICO's Morning Cybersecurity, March 30, 2018]

NOT SO RICH A COAST: The top headlines out of the recent Costa Rican election were that the Central American country had easily elected a backer of gay marriage as president. But that 38-year old president-elect, Carlos Alvarado, also has a lot of work to do to clean up Costa Rica's finances, after the big three credit raters handed San Jose four downgrades in five years. Bloomberg: Alvarado has "pledged to introduce 'fiscal rules' that limit the government's ability to run up debt, and to pass a package of tax and spending measures." But outside analysts are skeptical that Alvarado will be able to push through new tax increases.[ POLITICO's Morning Tax, April 3, 2018]

NORTHERN IRELAND

What movement means: The view from Brussels hasn’t changed since December. Either Northern Ireland remains in the customs union and aligned with EU regulation on the movement of goods, or the U.K. as a whole enters a customs union with the EU after it leaves (Michel Barnier re-started pushing that solution this week). Unless, of course, there suddenly appears a magical or technical way to hide a border that must exist to avoid a big fat hole in the EU’s internal market.[ POLITICO Brussels Playbook, April 13, 2018]

Calm has prevailed in Northern Ireland since the historic Good Friday agreement was signed 20 years ago this week, ending the violence known as “The Troubles,” which claimed more than 3,000 lives from 1968 to 1998. But political stability remains elusive: Belfast hasn’t had a governing executive since January 2017, while social, political and religious divides persist among the population. Now, Brexit threatens to undo the celebrated peace accord, in part because it could re-establish border controls between the EU’s Republic of Ireland and the British north. MEXICO

Our fight to save the vaquita — the world’s most endangered marine mammal — has been non-stop.

Scientists have pressured the Mexican government to effectively ban massive gillnets used to catch Mexican shrimp and other seafood that can injure or drown vaquitas. Supporters like you have called on U.S. retailers to stop carrying Mexican shrimp. And last year, our legal team formally petitioned the U.S. government to ban vaquita-harming imports.

But with fewer than 30 vaquitas now remaining and their population shrinking by half every year, this endangered porpoise has come too close to extinction for us not to take the next step.

So NRDC is suing the Trump administration for failing to follow federal law and ban Mexican shrimp and other seafood caught with gillnets that entangle and drown the small porpoise.

But with the vaquita’s survival on the line, we have to keep up the fight on other fronts as well.

Don’t wait for a court to decide. You can help protect the vaquita by committing to boycott shrimp from Mexico now.

Your choices as a consumer can have a real impact. Last year, thanks to pressure from people like you, Trader Joe’s committed to stop carrying Mexican shrimp — an important victory in our fight to protect the vaquita porpoise.

Now, we must keep the pressure building — in and out of court — until we’ve ensured full protection for the vaquita. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Take action to save the vaquita now.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Rhea Suh
