ONE MONTH SINCE HURRICANE MARIA,
MILLIONS OF PEOPLE STILL WORKING TO RECOVER
Emergency - Puerto Rico Reeling from Hurricane Maria
It's been more than a month since Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, and
most citizens are still living without electrical power. Many still lack clean drinking
water.  Basic necessities are in short supply in many parts of the island, especially
rural areas. Hospitals are struggling to keep up with the number of people who
need medical help. And while many supermarkets have reopened, the shelves remain
mostly empty of food and other necessities.  Oxfam is working quickly with local partners
to meet the immediate needs of those most vulnerable – children, elderly people, and
disabled people who aren't getting the help they need from the federal government.
While many lives have been saved, so much more needs to be done – can we count on you?  DONATE
Your support will go directly towards helping people like Magdanell Quiñones, a teacher
in San Juan, who says weeks of living in desperation has taken its toll.  "There has not
been a day when I have not come home crying because I am thinking of a
mother who came to me saying that we have no food," she says.  It's
unacceptable that, weeks since disaster struck, millions of American citizens are still
living without basic necessities.  Oxfam has rapidly mobilized, partnering with the
Office of the Mayor of San Juan to help distribute butane gas stoves so families
can boil water to safely drink and cook their own food – reaching 1,000 families
in at least 12 different neighborhoods.
Together with the Foundation for Puerto Rico, we are helping low-income elderly
people meet their urgent needs for food, diapers, batteries, and other essentials. And
in the US, we're reaching out to lawmakers and the Administration to make sure
that Puerto Rico remains on their agenda as an urgent issue.  But as time wears
on, challenges continue to grow. And we need your help today to make sure
we can continue reaching families still reeling from this disaster.
Thank you for standing with us, and with the people of Puerto Rico, during this time of grave need.
Sincerely,
Abby Maxman
