Who is Trump?
He has made and remade his public persona many times. Does he remember or even care? Perhaps originally he intended each embellishing
recreation of his persona as an evolution toward a perfect “Trump.” Somewhere along the line, if that was indeed
his intention, something went awry. The
message of perfecting Trump became “Trump is perfect.”
That may be giving him too much credit. No one has discovered a list of behavior
similar to that of George Washington’s list of manners upon which to model himself. More likely Roy Cohn provided Trump with
lessons necessary for a flim-flam man.
For Cohn xenophobia’s definition included communist and gay; for Trump the
definition includes Muslim and immigrant, terrorists and rapists.
Cohn’s practice
included unethical and unprofessional conduct that finally caught up with
him. What’s a little lie, even if it is
under oath? Yes, Trump mastered the art
of flim-flam and worked on perfecting the art of wheeling and dealing. He learned how to build a convincing
character in order to bring in the mark and even put his own brand on it. Marketing?
Conning? Six of one, half a dozen
of the other.
As Joshua Green writes in
his book “Devil’s Bargan,” “He knew who his audience was going to be – it was
not going to be people who want to have policy debates. It was going to be older people, people who
work with their hands.” Trump had
identified his “audience” aka marks. “Trump was no longer ‘talking to everyone.’
Now he was talking solely to the conservative grass roots and saying wildly
polarizing things.” People remain
suckers for “tell them what they want to hear.”
Trump claims that the deal is his art form, but he never qualifies it by
calling it an “honest” deal, not that it matters to a prevaricator. And so the U.S. ended up with a pseudo-President
-- a flimflammer with the Trump brand.
